"Just Lather, That's All"
by Hernanod Tellez
Excerpt-
"Thanks," he said. He went to the hanger for his belt, pistol and cap. I must have been very pale; my shirt felt soaked. Torres finished adjusting the buckle, straightened his pistol in the holster and after automatically smoothing down his hair, he put on the cap. From his pants pocket be took out several coins to pay me for my services. And he began to head toward the door. In the doorway he paused for a moment, and turning to me he said:
"They told me that you'd kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn't easy. You can take my word for it." And he headed on down the street.
...One example of a short text that I believe reflects on overconfidence well is, "Just Lather, Thats All" At the beginning of the story we find out a disturbing message in which rebels are being killed by Captain Torress, even though it doesn't directly explain why, we start to learn about the behaviors of Torress closer to the end. This excerpt from the short story explains, "They told me that you'd kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn't easy. You can take it from me."(14,Tellez) This shows Toress personality in that because he has killed before he knows how people react and feel, thus giving him the right to be overconfident in his abilities as a murderer. In my mind this links back to Alberto's thoughts because he too thought because he was the best runner out there it gave him the right to show off and be overconfident. I can also connect this back to my flash fiction because Torress, Alberto, and the rich man in the white suit share similar qualities such as, being overconfidence in there abilities, and they talk about there confidence instead of showing it...
